Reader inquires about Altland family, York auction rooms

Gloria Miller, Gloriamm@comcast.net, is looking for information on her great-grandfather, John O. Altland.
He died at the age of 50 in 1914.
But here’s a particularly clue. He worked in the city auction rooms.
What were they? Gloria wondered… .

I made a quick check at the York County Heritage Trust. Nothing in the York City directory for city auction rooms. The trust’s archives has many of it vast repository indexed via a database program called Pastperfect. That database search came up empty.
I vaguely remember references from reading about merchants P.A. and S. about their counting room. That firm’s business enterprises were so vast that perhaps Gloria should cast lines in those waters.
Anyone have any information on John Altland or York auction rooms?
