Only in York County

More in “Canada”

Well, I decided to head back “north” again Saturday… that’s two weekends in a row; will I lose my “Official York Countian” certificate for this?

Anyway, my mom and I decided to take advantage of a quiet weekend to head up to the new Hollywood Casino at Penn National, near Grantville.

Just as we crossed the river, it started to snow, so we were a little concerned, but all it did was create a goodly fog for the last 20 minutes of our drive, no accumulation (yay!)

But now, the good stuff – the gambling…

I’m a big spender. Really. My husband and I once made 5 bucks last 2 hours in Atlantic City. So today’s goal was to see how long it’d take me to burn through about 20 bucks.

I had been warned ahead of time (thanks Jo!) about possible issues with the smoking vs. nonsmoking sections… the good news was, given the holiday weekend and the less-than-ideal weather, it was amazingly empty. There was only one case where someone was smoking even nearby, and it started just as we were getting up to leave after a super-profitable string on one row of machines.

Things I liked:

1. Very easy to get a player’s club card.
2. Very clean, and VERY big. Wow.
3. Good payouts, at least so far!
4. Nice, helpful staff. I had my purse sitting a little further back from my chair than it probably should have been, and one of the security guards tapped me on the shoulder to mention it, saying he didn’t want anyone to walk off with it.
5. Nice music! I guess that’s a funny thing to say, but it was really upbeat and audible without being too loud.

I didn’t try the virtual blackjack or even video poker (which is normally my favorite) because we were cashed out before I saw them, but, hey, next time.

First time ever in Joan’s gambling history: I came out ahead! (Wow.) Left with $35 and some change, down a little from my high point of $46 but not too shabby by our low-budget standards. Mom ended up with, like, $1.80 of $25 left, so we ended up down for the day, but for a few hours of fun, we didn’t mind. (Hey, cheaper and more enjoyable than most movies.)
