Holiday meals: A look back, a look ahead
Last month, I asked what you had for Thanksgiving dinner.
In another few days, many of us will be sitting down to a big Christmas dinner; then, a week after that, there’s always the question of a traditional New Year’s meal. And that doesn’t even get into Hanukkah dinners and so on!
So, looking back, my sister-in-law Adriane said about Thanksgiving: “We enjoyed a fresh, locally raised turkey; Pioneer Woman’s creamy mashed potatoes; green bean casserole; homemade cranberry sauce; creamed corn; candied yams; seafood casserole; oyster stuffing; pecan pie with whiskey maple cream sauce; pumpkin pie and cherry pie! OMGosh! It was goood.”
Dianne had a different idea – AND combined two holidays! She says, “Our 15-member family celebrated Thanksgiving on Friday with Royal Farms chicken. Everyone brought something to contribute to the meal to make it the easiest Thanksgiving ever. We usually have Christmas gifting at the same time as some members travel great distances to join the celebration.”
My friend Linda H. says, “This year I didn’t cook. We moved some furniture out of my late uncle’s house in Maryland and into our new house here. We also moved some other stuff I had in storage and then we went to Cracker Barrel. my husband and I had the turkey dinner and our helper had chicken fried chicken. It was very yummy especially the chocolate chip pecan pie. Best thing, portions were limited to what was on the plate. Second best thing … no dishes.”
Looking ahead, what are you serving at your next holiday dinner? And start thinking about New Year’s… I’m long overdue for a good pork and sauerkraut post!
