York County’s and U. of Maryland’s Florence Gipe: ‘You train dogs, you educate nurses”
Florence Gipe was a York countian of accomplishment – professor and the first dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Her accomplishments were brought to light in a recent column by June Lloyd in the York Sunday News. Also of interest: Florence Gipe appears in AAUW’s ‘Legacies’ booklet.
Love the serendipity of the York Sunday News Viewpoints section.
There, in one recent week, columnists featured two York countians whose accomplishments should be remembered.
One, Florence Gipe, is remembered for her high academic achievement. The other, Jere Carl, for his meticulous clipping of newspaper articles and placement into scrapbooks – a researcher’s treasure.
So the columns started like this.
First June Lloyd’s essay on Florence Gipe:
Modern nursing education owes much to a native of rural Chanceford Township. She is credited as being one of the driving forces of establishing nursing as an academic discipline instead of vocational training. Dr. Florence Gipe is quoted on her own page on the University of Maryland School of Nursing website; it sums up her philosophy: “You train dogs, you educate nurses.”

And now Gordon Freireich’s column about Jere Carl:
If historical researchers have heroes, Jere Carl has to be one of them.
From the 1880s through the beginning of the 20th century, he meticulously cut out an amazing array of articles from York’s newspapers and pasted them into scrapbooks. Thirty volumes of scrapbooks, to be exact.
Today, those valuable records take up more than four running feet of shelf space at the York County Heritage Trust Library & Archives.
Jere Carl may be one of York County’s most overlooked “People of Interest.”
