Red Lion, Pa.’s Andrew Winter, right, photographs 2010’s largest pumpkin at York Fair. The 734-pound pumpkin is not the largest in Fair history, according to fair officials. The York County Agricultural Society organized in 1853 to throw a big show every year – the York Fair.
They established a fairgrounds southeast of King and Queen streets, occupied about eight years later by a Union troops training for battle in the Civil War. In 1888, the society moved the fair to its current location, west of York.
The agricultural society still governs the fair, and gathered recently in its annual meeting.
Once appointed, agricultural society members serve for life.
So who are these guys, anyway?
People who you would know.
