York County agrarianism vs. industrialization, Part I

Stories abound from York County’s storied agricultural past.
Many illustrate the conflict when an agricultural county evolves into a major industrial center.
Here’s a machine vs. animal story from the Spring Grove Ripplet in 1918… .

E.C. Trout, a Jefferson cattle dealer, was driving a herd of steers along the state road between Spring Grove and his hometown when an automobile struck one of the steers, flinging it to the road.
The road was just not big enough for both the cattle and the car, as the steer bolted in front of the vehicle.
The impact bent a fender, smashed both headlights and dented the radiator.
But the steer got the better hand.
“The steer was able to continue on its way,” the Ripplet reported.
