York County readers report sightings of Cliff Satterthwaite’s paintings, drawings – Part II
York artist Cliff Satterthwaite captures the raising of the cupola atop the Colonial Courthouse replica on West Market Street in 1976. The replica of the original 1750s York County Court House was built as part of 200th anniversary festivities of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. For years, York countians enjoyed York artist Cliff Satterthwaite’s work.
He would just show up at an event and capture the scene. And his documentary works were often mass printed in The Gazette and Daily for years.
His legacy artwork still appears around town, including in Helen Miller Gotwalt’s “Crucible of a New Nation.”
Diana Palladino is moving ahead with a biography about Satterthwaite and his work… .
“I do have all the photos of his work in my computer by category, by title, size, medium, etc. We have decided to go ahead and publish two books. One containing his works from the time he lived York and another for his works created in Fredericksburg (the area in which he now lives).”
She has received information from the York area since her query appeared here and also in the York Sunday News. (For example, see: York County readers report sightings of Cliff Satterthwaite’s paintings, drawings, Part I.)
Of course, she’s always interested in hearing more about Cliff and his work during his decades in York County.

The Colonial Courthouse was unveiled on May 1, 1976, amid a heavy rain. A caption in Helen Miller Gotwalt’s “Crucible of New Nation,” where the Cliff Satterthwaite drawing at the top of this post also came from, states that the weather made it no place for the ‘Summer Soldier or Sunshine Patriot.’
