{"id":516,"date":"2007-08-06T09:42:23","date_gmt":"2007-08-06T09:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"\/yorktownsquare\/2007\/08\/06\/post-103\/"},"modified":"2007-08-06T09:42:23","modified_gmt":"2007-08-06T09:42:23","slug":"post-103","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yorkblog.com\/yorktownsquare\/post-103\/","title":{"rendered":"Readers ask about Civil War unit, Great Wagon Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Love getting questions from readers.<br \/>\nIn fact, I wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ydr.com\/historicalperspective\/ci_6547635\">York Sunday News column<\/a> exploring some recent queries.<br \/>\nNow, we get a couple more: &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nJoe Nihen, morse73@ptd.net, is researching the 208 Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.<br \/>\nThe Civil War unit held a reunion in York on March 25, 1891.<br \/>\nIf newspapers covered the event, this should be an easy find because the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorkheritage.org\">York County Heritage Trust<\/a>  has microfilm from at least two newspapers &#8211; perhaps three &#8211; from that era. Having an exact date helps propel research.<br \/>\nBut if you have any other information on the unit or this reunion, please contact Joe or comment below.<br \/>\nPatty Mountjoy, pamountjoy@earthlink.net, is interested in the Great Wagon Road, which ran from Germantown through York and Hanover before entering the Shenadoah Valley at Harper&#8217;s Ferry.<br \/>\nThis was the route taken by Germans, English, Scotch-Irish, Moravians after disembarking from their long Atlantic voyages in the 1700s and explains why large pockets of such pioneers settled in Virginia, Tennesse, North Carolina, where the road ended.<br \/>\nJust something to watch, though. There&#8217;s controversy whether the bulk of pioneers crossed the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg and then entered then passed through the Cumberland Valley to the Shenadoah.<br \/>\nPatty was most interested in where the roads crossed the rivers from Lancaster to York and the Potomac into Virginia.<br \/>\nI suggested James G.
