Also of interest: <a href=\"\/yorktownsquare\/category\/hex-murder\/\">See additional stories and photos of the Hex Murder and trials.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five quick notes about the <a href=\"\/yorktownsquare\/2007\/06\/hex-murder-compared-to-ojs-ann\">Hex murder<\/a> of 1928, back <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ydr.com\/newsfull\/ci_6064533\">in the news<\/a> because of the proposed opening of the site of the notorious York County powwow killing: &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n1. Two writers have written book-lengths accounts of the murder: Arthur Lewis&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hex-Arthur-h-lewis\/dp\/0671771566\">&#8220;Hex&#8221;<\/a>, and Ross McGinnis&#8217; &#8220;Trial of Hex.&#8221; Lawyer McGinnis&#8217; comprehensive work is out of print, but available at several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorklibraries.org\/\">York County Library System<\/a> branches.<br \/>\n2. The Hex case was the topic of a full-length Hollywood film, &#8220;Apprentice to Kill,&#8221; released in 1988 and starring Donald Sutherland. York native Howard Grossman, the film&#8217;s producer, returned home for the world premier at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center.<br \/>\n3. Famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow criticized the trial: &#8220;Our belief in capital punishment as a deterrent is just another form of witchcraft. Apart from the mass desire for revenge, there is a subconscious desire to rid ourselves of what we believe to be an evil person.&#8221;<br \/>\n4. A second grim event struck the Rehmeyer farm in 1930. A 71-year-old man was killed in a machinery accident. An engine stalled on a hill and a trailing baler crushed the man walking between the two machines. &#8220;Tragedy seems to haunt the Rehmyer farm &#8230;,&#8221; a newspaper reported.<br \/>\n5. Teenage defendant John Curry demonstrated artistic skills in prison. After a 10-year prison stint, he joined the Army and was assigned to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower&#8217;s staff as a cartographer.
