Bubb<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nThe 65th anniversary of Pearl Harbor brings forth the sad story of 19-year-old Pvt. Eugene B. Bubb.<br \/>\nSad, because he is believed to be the first fighting man from York County to die in uniform in World War II.<br \/>\nNews of the York County serviceman\u2019s death reached York within days of the Dec. 7 attack. No details, just that he had died.<br \/>\nHis father, a World War I vet, had died earlier in 1941. Eugene Bubb\u2019s 15-year-old sister, Fern, received the telegram.<br \/>\n\u201cWe didn\u2019t have the radio on that Sunday. We were visiting relatives in Gettysburg,&#8221; she said years later. \u201cBy Thursday, we hadn\u2019t heard anything, and I thought he would be all right.&#8221;<br \/>\nBut the story doesn\u2019t stop there&#8230; .<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWhen the tablets of World War II dead were placed on the fa\u00e7ade of the old York County Courthouse, Eugene Bubb\u2019s name was omitted.<br \/>\nIt was later added, along with three others who died for their country.<br \/>\nHis name, obviously not part of the original molding, at least stands out today.<br \/>\nThe first in war &#8230; .<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At left, Eugene B.
