\"\"<\/a>Pfaltzgraff<\/span> pottery employees received this commemorative tile when Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff’s Thomasville plant closed in 2005. The plaque contains the signatures of Pfaltzgraff’s principals through the years. <\/strong>The Thomasville plant was closed\u00a0after the\u00a0company was sold\u00a0and manufacturing of the Pfaltzgraff line moved overseas. <\/strong>More than 13,000 pottery pieces and other Pfaltzgraff products will go on sale later this month. <\/strong>Also of interest: Dragon-style pieces, picked up in York County, intrigue reader.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Labor Day is over, and York countians are seeking a return to their school-year and autumn routines.<\/p>\n

But how about changing that routine, that paradigm, and do different things.<\/p>\n

The community is filled with opportunities to, well, participate in the community.<\/p>\n

A prime opportunity is out there Sept. 21-23 to load up the hutch and experience history when 13,000 pieces of Pfaltzgraff pottery go on sale.<\/a><\/p>\n

The York, Pa., Daily Record\/Sunday News reported that 13,000-plus pieces\u00a0 –\u00a0 mugs, plates and silverware – are duplicates and items the company chose not to archive… .<\/p>\n

The sale is taking place in an appropriate place – the York County Heritage Trust’s Agricultural and Industrial Museum. The making of pottery is an early American industry and this sale observes the fact that Pfaltzgraff pottery first shaped in York County 200 years ago.<\/p>\n

In this mold of getting out into the community, here are some other opportunities.<\/p>\n

– While at the Pfaltzgraff sale, visit the work of four young curators who conceived and developed the exhibit: \u201cDunce Caps, Dollhouses, and Diplomas: The Lives of York County Children.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

– Glen Rock will dedicate a plaque<\/a> on Sept. 18 recognizing the Cold Spring Hotel, a now-demolished structure that served railroad-related travelers and workers 100 years ago.<\/p>\n

– Dr. Charles C. Fennell, Jr. will present to the the York Civil War Roundtable on Sept. 21<\/a> on the topic: \u201cAssault on Little Round Top: A Southern Perspective on Lost Opportunity.” He will lead a battlefield walk at Gettysburg National Military Park on Sept. 24.<\/p>\n

– The York County Library System<\/a> is participating in the “One Book, One Communty” reading program. The community is reading Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help.”<\/a><\/p>\n

– Learn how to get your news published<\/a> at our “Your Town, Your News” seminar on Sept. 13.<\/p>\n

– Check out the fledgling Uptown York Rotary club<\/a> at Sam and Tony’s restaurant. The club caters to those who prefer a happy hour meeting scheduling.<\/p>\n

And all this isn’t even counting the biggest York County event of the year, the York Fair, running from Sept. 9 to 18.<\/p>\n

Really, folks, York County offers an endless number of opportunities to get out and around.<\/p>\n

Indeed, if someone had the desire and energy, he or she could go to a community event every day of the year.<\/p>\n

Anyone want to take up that challenge, or more realistically, avail yourself of one new opportunity a week?<\/p>\n
