\nYork County, Pa’s, Edward Spangler was 16 years old when he enlisted in the 130th Pennsylvania Infantry in the Civil War. The story is that the 5-foot, 2-inch tall lad was two inches shorter than regulations. Scott Mingus and I have penned a sequel to our ‘Civil War Voices’ book<\/a>, published on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War in 2011.<\/p>\n

Our ‘Echoing Still: More Civil War Voices from York County, Pa.’ is now at local booksellers. Both Scott and I will both speak and sign books Gettysburg Sesquicentennial Remembrance<\/a> event on May 4. That will be our big public unveiling of the new book.<\/p>\n

Of course, when you put up a new book, you also have a news release. So, here it is:<\/p>\n

Civil War historians Scott L. Mingus Sr. and James McClure have written a sequel to their popular 2011 book \u201cCivil War Voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their \u201cEchoing Still: More Civil War Voices from York County, Pa.\u201d has been released as part of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.<\/p>\n

The new book captures more stories from original letters and diaries and newspaper accounts. The authors have interviewed descendants of those who fought in the war or lived in the Civil War era.<\/p>\n

The 192-page book provides scores of stories from the decades before the conflict, the war itself and then about the fate of the veterans and their families after they returned.<\/p>\n

The authors have arranged York County\u2019s war stories chronologically through a series of vignettes, informed by mostly previously unpublished documents and oral histories.<\/p>\n

The county, resting on the Mason-Dixon Line, sent about 5,000 men to fight in the Union Army. In the days before the Battle of Gettysburg, about 11,000 Confederate soldiers tramped on county soil.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have collected the rich oral tradition\u00a0 and written memories of York countians during the Civil War to preserve it for future generations so these stories are not lost forever,\u201d Mingus said.<\/p>\n

Mingus has written \u201cFlames Beyond Gettysburg: The Gordon Expedition, June 1863,\u201d “The Louisiana Tigers in the Gettysburg Campaign\u201d and several other Civil War books. McClure\u2019s titles, \u201cEast of Gettysburg\u201d and \u201cAlmost Forgotten,\u201d tell about the Civil War in York County.<\/p>\n

\u201cEchoing Still\u201d is available for $14.95 at regional booksellers.<\/p>\n
