As our headline said: \u201cIt\u2019s a real place. And it\u2019s really in the middle of nowhere \u2014 or, at least, it used to be.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/06\/05\/AR2006060501174.html\">http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/06\/05\/AR2006060501174.html <\/a><br \/>\nYork County  has its share of wonderful names: Lucky, Glades, Castle Fin. But Sticks is the county&#8217;s most revered podunk name.<br \/>\nThe Codorus Township hamlet was named after a prominent family.<br \/>\n\u201cIn fact, the Sticks area wasn\u2019t really the sticks even in the 1800s,&#8221; I wrote in Never to be Forgotten. \u201cIt boasted at least two doctors, including Wesley C. Stick, and the Glenville Academy, complete with science laboratory and library.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd today, Sticks is not in the sticks. It&#8217;s a crossroads, particularly used by commuters heading back and forth from Maryland and traveling to and from Interstate 83.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post profiled Podunk, Vt., this week.
