Fighting the Global War on Terrorism: Linked in with neat York County, Pa., history stuff – Sept. 16, 2010
York (Pa.) City firefighter Shawn Caruso prays in front of the photos of the area fighting men who have been lost in the line of duty since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Caruso and other firefighters attend a memorial service at York’s Memorial Park on 9/11. The photo of Neil Roberts, the first to fall, appears immediately over the firefighter’s head. Also of interest: World Trade Center I-beam at York’s Prospect Hill Cemetery: ‘Last week we had a young firefighter from Juniata … here to see it’ and Navy SEAL Neil C. Roberts: ‘In this simple grave … lies a national hero’ and York County deaths from 20th-21st century wars top 1,000.
Neat stuff from all over …
Richard Saylor, a Dallastown native and an archivist for the State Archives, has published a book entitled Soldiers to Governors: Pennsylvania’s Civil War Veterans Who Became State Leaders (Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, 2010).
“The book is a well-written, informative discussion of Pennsylvania Governors who had served in the Civil War, including many fine color illustrations of artifacts and documents associated with these men,” his colleague and fellow York countian Jonathan Stayer wrote in an e-mail… .
The author is active with the Dallastown Historical Society and a member of the Kaltreider-Benfer Library Board in Red Lion.
It’s wonderful to see this ongoing Civil War scholarship come from the pens – or typing fingers – of those with York County ties.
Noteworthy column by York countian David Dietz’s op ed piece: Like Muslims today, Mennonites once faced unfair discrimination.
