War and Peace: military memorabilia, antique sleds for sale in Hopewell Township – Linked in to history, Dec. 4, 2012

More stuff below: Martin-Parry/Susquehannock village/Emig Mansion

Dick Boyd is a labor leader, author and noted World War II veteran. He’s also a collector and seller of antique sleds and toboggans. Ralph Kile Jr. rents a barn to Boyd on his Scarecrow Farm, an indoor flea market in Hopewell Township. ‘At one point he owned more than 700, but has sold many of them and now has about 300, all of them for sale,’ a ydr.com story about Scarecrow Farm states. The story also quotes Boyd: ‘I’ve been collecting about 14 years, and began selling about eight years ago.’ (See related photo below.) Also of interest: Shrewsbury Township sleigh rescued: ‘Tell the children we saved Christmas’.

Neat stuff from all over … .

Scott Mingus and I are putting out a last call.

We’re asking families to share more memories from their York County ancestors in the Civil War era. Last year, we compiled such stories and photographs into a book, “Civil War Voices from York County, Pa.: Remembering the Rebellion and the Gettysburg Campaign.”

Now we plan a sequel, which will be published before the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in 2013.

Scott and I are looking for family memories, letters, diaries, newspaper accounts and other written formats or oral retellings from the war front or home front.

To share information, contact Mingus at scott mingus@yahoo.com or 1383 Sterling Drive, York 17404.

Emig Mansion: Emigsville’s historic showpiece home, the Emig Mansion, is now available at a reduced price: $350,000.

Remember Martin-Parry?: A Martin-Parry enthusiast, Ben Purkey, has started up a website featuring this wagonmaker and automobile/truck body manufacturer with strong York County roots.

“It is under development but hopefully will be functional enough soon to be useful, he wrote. “It is the result of some Martin-Parry automobile owners that have expressed an interest in having a web site that will function as a location where M-P information can be collected and shared.”

Martin is still know in York County as the Martin in Martin Memorial Library. And the Carriage Works Apartments, which just opened in West York, is M-D’s former factory.

Palm tree in York County?: Yorkblogger June Lloyd asks this question in a recent post: Did York County’s last Susquehannock village have a palm tree?

Ralph Kile Jr. of Scarecrow Farm in Hopewell Township is seen with some of the military memorabilia sold at Scarecrow Farm.
