Tour de York? Wheelmen raced around York Fair’s track: Linked in with neat York County history stuff, Sept. 9, 2012
This photo, courtesy of Mel Miller and the West Manchester Township Historical Society, shows bicycle races at the York Fair in 1904. The cameras of the day – or at least at the York Fair that day, were not fast enough to catch the fast wheelmen, as they were then called. You can barely make out their blurry figures. With the return in popularity of bicycling, perhaps such races could be added to a future fair’s card? Mel Miller gave an analysis of the photograph, submitted this week, York Fair Week: “Appropriate.” Also of interest: This York Fair Mural is fading from sight.
Neat stuff from all over … .

One year later: Tropical Storm Lee visited this region one year ago. Some folks are still recovering from its wrath.
America’s sweetheart? Well, we won’t go that far, but many York countians have fond memories of Marilyn Monroe, as this entry in ydr.com’s ‘Remember’ series indicates.
Forum of the day: That scary truck crash in Wrightsville last week put the spotlight on Veterans Memorial Bridge, too. Which brings to mind an urban legend about the span involving a worker who fell in concrete and was left there during construction. That’s almost as believable as the 7 Gates of Hell in Hellam Township:. Do you have any other favorite urban legends or such stories about York County? Background: Don’t go looking for a bootprint in Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Come out to meet York Daily Record/Sunday News journalist – and the NewsVroom.
