The Yorktowne Hotel’s corn pudding, Hanover’s Santa’s Cabin and 10 other fun holiday facts
These Glen Rock residents are up late, watch as the Glen Rock Carolers perform at 2:30 a.m. on Christmas Day. The Glen Rock Carol Singers’ performance is much anticipated rite of the holiday season. The group starts singing along the streets of the borough at about midnight on Christmas and perform all night. (See additional photographs by the YDR’s Eileen Joyce below.) Glen Rock is all hits and valley so the Glen Rock Carolers are always walking up hill (seen here) or down. Also of interest: Yes, people still dress like this in Glen Rock.
1. York’s Rescue Mission will provide more than 1,400 backpacks full of supplies this holiday season.
2. Bethany United Methodist Church will put together baskets full of food that provide Christmas dinner to 25 families.
3. There are 2,000 lights on the Christmas tree in Continental Square this year.
4. York city’s public works superintendent in charge of decorating downtown is named Dave Rudolph. He thinks it’s funny, too.
5. It takes 6,000 hours to set up, run and disassemble the display at Christmas Magic in Rocky Ridge County Park.
6. People have gathered at midnight on Christmas in Glen Rock since 1848 to sing carols, packing the streets all night.
7. Santa’s cabin in Hanover was built in the 1930s and this year is celebrating 75 years on Center Square.
8. New York Wire Co.’s factory steam whistle each year plays a Christmas concert. It can be heard from 10 miles away.
9. The Yorktowne Hotel will make 300 pounds of corn pudding, a local holiday staple, for Christmas celebrations.
10. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation gathered more than 23,000 toys for York County children this season.
11. Before this year, York County last saw a trace of Christmas snow in 2010. The area has about a 30 percent chance of snow any given Christmas.
12. York city crews collect about 2,000 Christmas trees each year after the holidays, and turn them into mulch.
