Stories about York County, Pa., for better or worse, go around the world every day

This view of  Santa from the York, Pa., Daily Record/Sunday News was picked up by media across America earlier this month. Every day, whether good news or bad, stories and photos from York County media are shared to newspapers and websites, really, around the world. See this photo gallery of Santa at the Galleria. Also of interest:  A hot York County news cycle that will live long in memory and York, Pa., no hardscrabble here: ‘It’s a midsize city with an interesting history.’

About six months ago, a guest columnist in the York Sunday News pulled three stories out of his Google searches and commented that York County has to tell a better story to the world.

He pointed to stories about a woman who bit off a piece of his girlfriend’s ear, a stabbing linked to an ‘American Idol’ finale and a local group fighting against an education initiative to create national math and reading standards.

Those crime stories are memorable, but the fact is that every day dozens of stories of varying stripes about York County go out.

Some reflect positively on the community, others are tough to take and still others are good or bad, depending on where you’re sitting. Day in, day out, the county’s story is not.

In the list below of just one daily Google News web search, notice  the story about American Revolution POW Camp Security’s land preservation made the Washington Post. Good news for preservationists. But if you’re a Springettsbury Township resident concerned about taxes, you might lament that a taxpaying entity will never locate there.

Such is news. You never know how it will be received.

But to any claim that York County’s message to the world is skewed to the negative, check out the list below. And set up your own Google search, so you can see how York County presents itself to the world.

Our story is often quite good because we live in an area with a high quality of life – a great place to raise a family.
