These 20 pro sports celebrities have York County ties

York County, Pa., has produced its second NFL Hall of Famer – Ron Wolf. Here, he is seen in this Associated Press photo with a bust of  himself. That’s his son, Eliot, at his induction ceremony last weekend. York County’s initial pick by the hall – Chris Doleman – entered the Canton, Ohio, lineup last year. Also of interest: A big week for York County, Pa., sports: Ron Wolf, Bruce Arians and John Kuhn score national honors.

White roses: For a White Rose hero

A York County community member is doing a smart thing. He’s making plans to invite sports heroes, entertainment celebrities and other accomplished people with York County roots or links back to the community.

He enrolling these celebs to help their home town and county.

Several groups have had fundraising success doing this.

York Little Theatre invited playwright Ken Ludwig a couple of years ago and Friends of Camp Security brought in author Rita Mae Brown.

This community member asked that I look at a list of names he provided for additions, contact information and general comment. So here’s the list I sent him back.

Today, we’ll look at sports celebs. Tomorrow, people of accomplishment in other fields.

Here it goes with 19 others to join Ron Wolf:

1. Steve Keim, Arizona Cardinals general manager, is seen at right at the Cardinals training facility in Tempe, Ariz. This native of York County was named named NFL Executive of the Year for the 2014-2015 season.

2. Even better known is the Cardinals coach, Bruce Arians.

3. Butch Wynegar – Cleveland Indians Triple-A organization.

4. Chris Doleman – He was at the Hall of Fame ceremony to witness Ron Wolf’s induction.

6. John Kuhn:  Green Bay Packers fullback.

7. Brooks Robinson: This baseball great started his pro career with the York White Roses.

8. Loretta Claiborne: Special Olympics great.

9. Chantel Tremitiere: Former WNBA player.

10. Tom Wolf: Pennsylvania’s governor will no doubt be a much-called-upon celeb for years to come.

11. Jon Witman: Eastern York High grad, Penn State and Steelers fullback.

12. Scott Fitzkee: Former NFL player who was selected as the top prep athlete to come from York County.

13. Randy Edsall: University of Maryland football coach and former Susquehannock High School athlete.

14. Randy Edsall’s brother, Duke, is also well known for his years as an ACC basketball referee.

15.  Lincoln Kennedy: He lived in York as a youth and went on to play for the Oakland Raiders

16.  Paul Snyder: Atlanta Braves super scout from Dallastown.

17.  Woody Bennett: York native, Miami Dolphins fullback.

18. Here come the fullbacks: You could have a fullbacks night: Bennett, Kuhn, Witman and the Coxes, from northern York County.

19. And I’ll add another one: Lenny Moore, former Penn Stater and Baltimore Colt running back.
