Spry Grammar School grads true to their school: Linked in to history, 1/3/12

Neat stuff below: Steam into History/Diehl’s Candy/Central Market

The Spry Grammar School Committee observed the centennial of the building of their York Township school in 1912. The school, demolished in 1967, stood on the grounds of the current Otterbein United Methodist Church. ‘The book describes the lifestyle in York Township and York County at that time. It contains history of the school and education from then to 1962 when it was no longer used for school purposes. It also includes memories from a number of alumni,’ committee member Mike Grandia explained. The committee, which sponsors biennial school reunions, has been in contact with the York County Heritage Trust Archives to place a copy there for archive patrons to use. For details about the committee and book, contact Mike at: grandiamike@aol.com.  Also of interest: Former Spry Grammar School students still true to their school and 100 year old Hiestand School: Small Old East York school spawns big memories.

Neat stuff from all over … .

Debi Beshore, who has worked to put forth good information about good projects around York County for many years, is doing so again in letting folks know about Steam Into History’s progress.

That project includes new construction of a Civil War-era locomotive that will pull an excursion train along the old Northern Central Railway between New Freedom and Hanover Junction – the same route taken by Abraham Lincoln on his way to and and from delivering his Gettysburg Address.

“For updated photos on the progress of the engine you will find them on the Kloke Locomotive Works website,” she wrote in an email. “If you go to you will see the train is on the way to being finished and start testing.”

The group has a Facebook page, which includes a photograph of Steam into History’s shop at 2 West Main in New Freedom, among many other things.

A working railroad is returning to the railroad town of New Freedom, long the first stop on the Northern Central and later Pennsylvania Railroad north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Meanwhile, Stewartstown Railroad fans hope for a miracle that would reenergize that line, which intersected with the Northern Central at New Freedom. For details about Steam into History, check out: Will Steam into History steam into history?

Forum of the day, II: Exchangers are also discussing Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls, that increase on Sunday:

Carl Diehl actually has two cough drop cans from this noted York County candymaker from the early 1900s. So I ased him for a look at both, and he replied with this photograph. See Diehl’s Cough Drops of York, Pa., ‘Stops that Bark’ for details.
