Manchester Township’s White Oak Park – from amusement park to teen hangout: Linked in to history, Nov. 21, 2012
More neat stuff below: Shady Dell/Bucket boats/Emig Mansion
This is a rare photograph of White Oak Park, The Oaks, in Manchester Township. It’s the August 2013 entry in the Manchester Township Historical Society’s fundraising calendar. The calendar gives a brief history of The Oaks, from its pre-World War II picnic and amusement park days to its 1960s conversion to a dance venue for teens. The historical society continues to look for photographs from The Oaks. Contact ManTwpHistory@gmail.com. As for the calendar, those interested may purchase it via the same email address. For more on the calendar, check out: Calendar dedicated to history ‘digger.’ See additional calendar photos below. Also of interest: York-area memories about ‘The Oaks’ pile up.
Neat stuff from all over … .
A friend and I recently discussed the bucket boat that floated on the Codorus Creek . The contraption allows bridge inspectors to see the underbelly of span a little more comfortably than hanging over its sides.
I still wonder what it’s like to be hoisted in a bucket from a floating boat, but my friend, an engineer, said the boat has anchors or stabilizers that steady it.
OK.
Our conversation turned to the fact that the boat was operating under the Princess Street Bridge, not far from the York County Heritage Trust’s Agricultural and Industrial Museum. That museum champions York County innovation and creativity. It exhibits machines, some originating in York County, that contributed to the county’s industrial might.
So a bucket boat floating outside AIM is about right.
Looking for a gem? The Emig Mansion, that lovely home in Emigsville, has been for sale for several months now, and its owners have reduced the asking price by $100,000. So Blake Stough reports over at Preserving York.
Another gem is sold: Blake is also keeping readers up to date about Shady Dell, which has been sold. Some of the well-known outbuildings on this former hangout’s grounds are razed. I was talking to someone who has observed the Dell for some years, and she told me that despite ongoing changes to the grounds, the old dance floor still is intact.
Forum of the day: A commenter named Copper Kettle over at The Exchange has started a thread about bald eagle in – and above – York County.
These images of capturing the brass ring at the carousel are not from White Oak park but are included in the Manchester Township Historical Society’s calendar to capture the “thrill of the Flying Horse Carousel.”
