What’s a deltiologist? Linked in with neat York County history stuff – Feb. 3, 2011

Joyce Rode shared this postcard advertising sales at Reineberg's Shoe Store. The card was sent in 1980 and 1981, but the photo is from 1925. DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS - SUBMITTED

Joyce Rode shared this postcard with the York Daily Record/Sunday News showing advertising sales at York, Pa.’s, Reineberg’s Shoe Store. The photo shows this local icon in 1925, and the business operates today in a Springettsbury Township location. Mary Linkous from New Park in southeastern York County addressed a query from Jo Ott about why some postcards of old had animals attached to them.

She did not know the answer, but put forth a response that opened two new areas of insight for me.
First, she provided a postcard expert: Mary L. Martin Postcards in Perryville, Md., across the Susquehanna River from Havre de Grace, not far from York County’s southern border.
The store is billed as the the largest postcard shop on earth with 10 million cards… .

And secondly, the store’s website says the shop offers antique postcards for the experienced deltiologist as well as the amateur collector.
Deltiologist?
That sent me to the dictionary. Of course, that’s someone who studies and collects postcards.
Everyone knows that?
Right?
Is that new to you?
New to me.
Anyway, sounds like a day trip to Martin’s in Perryville is in order.

Other neat stuff from all over … .
Query from reader: Marilyn Hansen e-mailed with a question: Was I the James McClure from York County that she was looking for?
I’m not, but here is part of her query in case the right James McClure reads this:

“I saw that the editor of this newspaper was James McClure so am hoping that this is the right address. I have been working on the McClure family for about 20 years — being a descendant of Arthur McClure who died in 1800 in Greenbrier Co., VA. Trying to trace lines of all of his sons, I end up with a James McClure
(descendant of James, son of Arthur) in York Co., Pa, son of Hubert and grandson of Eustice Blaine McClure. If you are the right James and if you are interested in learning more about your family, please let me know. If you are not James McClure or if you are the wrong James McClure, please let me know this also so I can continue on my search.”
