Lenny Moore has strong links to York
Lenny Moore, famed Penn State and Baltimore Colts running back, is coming back home when he appears at York Sports Night.
The annual event is set for Jan. 25, 2006, at the old Central York High School, 300 E. Seventh Ave., North York. The autograph session will be at 6:15 p.m., and the show starts at 7:15 p.m.
Moore has strong family ties to York, as attested to by the following excerpt from “Almost Forgotten,” my book on black history in York County:
Lenny Moore, Pro Football Hall of Fame running back for the Baltimore Colts, told the Quarterback Club of York in 1999 that his parents provided a firm foundation from which he was able to grow.
Moore graduated from high school in Reading and earned football honors at Penn State before his success in the pros.
Lenny Moore’s mother and father, George and Virginia Moore; his uncles, Ernest and John Moore; and Eliza Moore, mother of George, Ernest and John, are all buried in North York’s Lebanon Cemetery.
The family has roots in Bamberg, S.C.
