About slain Game Commission officer David L. Grove: A local law-enforcement hero
Pennsylvania Game Commission Officer David L. Grove teaches a nature class in McSherrystown, Adams County, Pa., earlier this year. The officer was killed this week while performing his duties in Freedom Township, Adams County. State police Sgt. Jonathan Mays, commander of the Gettysburg barracks said this about David Grove: “Last night, we lost a local law-enforcement hero. It’s always a very difficult thing.” Also of interest: Errant pickup driver knocked on-duty fire policeman out of his shoes and Police museum, Web site packed with York County law enforcement info and Deadly York fire: ‘There never was a more horrible one’.
David L. Grove, who died in the line of duty this week, is among more than 200 U.S. wildlife officers who have been killed or have died while on duty.
That comes from an online database operated by Southeastern Outdoors. Those include five Pennsylvania wildlife officers: … .

* Joseph McHugh – Game Protector McHugh was shot and killed. The suspect claimed it was an accident and was found not guilty at trial. Nov. 7, 1915.
* William Etheldred Shoemaker – Fish Warden Shoemaker was shot on Aug. 25, 1921, and died from his injuries on Sept. 22, 1921.
* John B. Ross – Game Protector Ross died July 31, 1942.

The Police Heritage Museum keeps an comprehensive list of law enforcement officers from York County and the region who died in the line of duty.
The museum, unfortunately, now must add to that number of heroes who died doing their job. In fact, officials already have added a tribute to David Grove: Police Heritage Museum.
