Shady Del Knight in worldwide search of honorary Shady Dell rats linked to old York, Pa., teen hangout
This distinctive cherub appeared on the wall of the teen ‘danceteria’ at the Shady Dell, the old southside York, Pa., hangout. John Ettline, owner of the now-closed teen club, commissioned an unknown artist to paint this distinctive scene, that was soon joined by ‘I love you’ graffiti. This photo joins many others on the website Shady Dell Music & Memories that has attracted an audience of folks who have been to the Shady Dell or wish they had gone to the old Violet Hill, Spring Garden Township hangout. Also of interest: York’s Shady Dell for sale: ‘People don’t like to see their past vanish’ and York-area full of memory-spawning landmarks and Interstate lined out Melvin’s swan song.
Last we heard from Tom Anderson, aka Shady Del Knight, he sent in photos of the Dell collected from fans and posted on his site.
Now, Tom, who grew up in York County, plans to unveil his identity and his picture on the popular site dedicated to this old hangout. More on that next post.
Meanwhile, we include a recent note from the Knight with some photos that will intrigue Dell fans: …
2010 has been a breakthrough year for Shady Dell Music & Memories. When I submitted my last update back in July, the blog was celebrating its second anniversary. I shared with you rare photographs that I had received showing Lynn B. and her friends hobnobbing and dancing at the Dell in 1961. In the months that followed there have been more surprises, more generous contributions and an explosion of new interest and growth. Shady Dell Music & Memories, the little blog that could, will soon reach 300 published posts and now has regular readers all across America and around the world. Although many of my blog followers never went to the Dell or even heard of the place, young and old from near and far are joining the pack and becoming honorary Dell rats!
Tom Anderson: ‘I was still reeling from the one-of-a kind images sent to me by fomer Dell rat Lynn B. when Gettysburg resident Phil Spangler astonished me with his own set of rare photos.’
Tom Anderson: ‘The pictures, lifted from Phil’s family album, reveal what the Shady Dell looked like in its infancy back in the 1920’s and early 30’s!’
Tom Anderson: Phil’s ancestors were the Dell’s first known occupants.
