How to get your photographs before thousands of eyes: Linked in to York County history, Nov. 3, 2012

More stuff below: Penny postcards/Camp Security/Avalongs

York countian Ralph Brandt captured this scene of the Little Conewago Creek from Route 74 this week when Sandy visited town. He submitted this photo looking upstream at the Dover Township/West Manchester Township line, the one below and several others. Photography enthusiasts such as Ralph can submit their photographs for public publication on the Your Photos section of ydr.com. The work of contributors there is displayed before thousands of viewers over the course of a year. ‘I do what catches my eye,’ Ralph wrote. ‘Right now I am using a Nikon D7000 with a 18-270 Tamron.’ You can see more of Ralph’s camera work on his albums posted on Google+. Neat stuff from all over:

We enjoy hearing from our regular contributors.

This week, Eric Lowe emailed with a reminder about a memorable postcard site:

“What did your home town look like during the era of the penny postcard?

“Click on the state and then on the county to see old penny picture postcards from that area. Some larger counties have individual cities. Then double click the card to enlarge it… pretty neat.

“Someone has an enormous collection of post cards!!”

That someone is USGenWeb archives.

Camp Security revisited: Yorkblogger June Lloyd reminds us about Sunday’s Camp Security lecture, courtesy of Jonathan Stayer. She also tells us about a building said to be linked to the camp that some folks might remember.

Stained glass heritage: This York County stained glass maker – Ehrhart Stained Glass Inc.- has ties to the 1920s.

Blog post of the day, I: Don’t miss: Buffy’s World has put up a link salad – Hurricane Sandy links to victim shoots home intruder video and much more.

Blog post of the day, II:
Only York’s Joan Concilio gives a bit of insight about cost of a wedding reception at Avalong Restaurant, the old family dining place at Whiteford and Mount Zion roads. Not suprisingly, Avalongs, as it was called, is inexpensive by today’s standards.

Forum of the day, I: And Organic food stand opens at Central Market: http://bit.ly/Ur9qi2. Do you think organic food is becoming more popular in York County? Background: From squealing pigs to wireless, York County markethouses has changed.

Forum of the day, II: Sandy might have obscured a YDR story that appeared, literally, in the middle of the storm about the growth of the arts in York. Have you visited the North Beaver Street neighborhood in York recently? Background: Old F.O.E. building focal point of downtown renaissance.

Amid Sandy’s downpour, Ralph Brandt stood on the Dover Township/West Manchester Township line and looking downstream at the Grandview golf course.
