‘We kids would go up there on that swinging bridge in the summertime and, in between working hours, we’d dive off of the bridge into the creek or we’d make it swing. You couldn’t swing it much, but a little bit. We had great times there at that swinging bridge.’ Late in life, Raymond Sechrist provided these boyhood recollections of this swinging bridge.This tightly bound span provided a short cut for workers walking from North York to York Safe & Lock and back.

This chart shows S. Morgan Smith’s legacy – three York County, Pa., companies that operate today. Voith Hydro, American Hydro and Precision Components trace their roots to Smith, directly or indirectly. Smith was there at the beginning of a fourth company before leaving to found S. Morgan Smith: Johnson Controls, formerly York Corporation, Borg-Warner and York International, among others.

York County has a lot of golf courses – we once experimented with the Gold Capital of the U.S. slogan – and York countians love their golf. And this 2011 scene of golfing in a snowstorm on the Springwood Golf Club proves both points.

York Peppermint Patties came from this factory for decades. This cool-breeze candy is now made in Mexico, but you can still find restaurants and other sites around York County that proudly offer the candy gratis after the meal or for low cost as a snack.

Matt Bupp sent in this very clear aerial image of the old King’s Mill/Schmidt & Ault/Smurfit-Stone site along the Codorus Creek. He estimates that the photo was taken in the 1950s. The complex is now owned by York College of Pennsylvania, which just unveiled a redone sign showing the Schmidt & Ault logo, plus high water marks from the 1933 and 1972 floods. This photo shows the 1812 manor house on the site. York College of Pennsylvania officials say they have no plans to renovate either that historic structure or the old mill.

‘Here’s a “lost Satterthwaite” for your collection,’ ex-Yorker and Florida journalist Gary Dutery wrote on my Facebook page. ‘I wonder if anyone remembers York, Pa.’s “Colonial Days?” ‘ Gary went on to tell his a story about fellow York ex-pat artist Cliff Satterthwaite, now living in Fredericksburg, Va.
