The York County Science and Engineering Fair has become a rite of March in York County, Pa., Schools. It follows the school fairs, so it features the best of the best. A York, Pa., Daily Record/Sunday News stories recounts the story of the fair, which goes back to 1984. Thought that was the fair’s first year, it doesn’t mean science instruction wasn’t done in York County Schools. Check out the list of prominent scientists who come from York County, many with international reputations, as proof. One science teacher told the YDR that some York County students have moved to the national level – ‘a rare chance for kids to be treated like “rock stars.”

Some months ago, Tom Gibson alerted us to the presence today of busybody mirrors, also called spionnetje, that were staples on building around York, Pa., decades ago. We found one on West Market Street near Union Lutheran Church. Just yesterday, Tom pointed out that one was posted on a building on East Market Street. So the hunt was on, and wouldn’t you know it? I’ve walked by this mirror, at 262 E. Market, scores of times on my way to the York County Heritage Trust, at 250 E. Market.
Wyndridge Farm near Dallastown has found two new uses for a 77-acre farm and 120-year-old barn. Wyndridge Crafty hard cider is made there, and the place is being developed into a special events venue. That means weddings and such. ‘The plan is to make Wyndridge Farm into what (owner) Steve Groff calls “a craft beverage destination and special events venue” that will draw visitors from throughout the mid-Atlantic,’ a YDR.com story states.

The Meadowbrook mansion, seen here in a Picturing History’s combined then & now photo, is one of several examples of mansions that York County tobacco built. The Springettsbury Township home was the summer residence of Edwin Myers, who was in the leaf tobacco business in the late 1800s.
Some folks, aware of the underground comfort stations in York, Pa.’s, Continental Square, are nonetheless not sure where these men’s and women’s facilities sit. Well, the former planter that has caused the roof problems below marks the spot. The York Daily Record/Sunday News photo shows the circular planter’s footprint. So below the planter rests the restrooms.
