Of York County cartoons and Oregon catalogues

A Walt Partymiller cartoon will appear in an upcoming catalogue detailing the papers of Ava Helen and Linus Pauling, holder of two Nobel Prizes.
Partymiller drew editorial page cartoons for The Gazette and Daily in York for 30 years and developed a national reputation along with his boss, J.W. Gitt, during the Cold War… .

Gitt, owner of The Gazette and Daily, was a friend and correspondent of Linus Pauling, one of the 20th century’s best-known scientists and an advocate for peace.
The Special Collections at Oregon State University Valley Libraries, home to the Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers, is publishing the catalogue of the complete holdings of the these papers.
Curators there have 5,000 images to select from to illustrate the catalogue but have a particular interest in a Partymiller cartoon from 1962. The cartoons would be one of the few illustrations that are part of the 1,800-page catalogue so publishers believe it will stand out.
The special collections Web site, http://osulibrary.orst.edu/specialcollections/coll/pauling/ gives extensive biographical information on the husband and wife.
Partymiller hailed from the Pacific Northwest, so it’s fitting that his work would return there. For samples of his work, click here.
By the way, this is an example of one of the regular requests the Daily Record/Sunday News receives for reprint permission. These requests have picked up since much of our published material is available worldwide on the Web.
