Who was the builder of the original Brockie Mansion? Linked in with neat York County history stuff – June 2, 2011

York, Pa.’s Prospect Hill Cemetery is the resting place for many of York County’s most noteworthy citizens. Here is former U.S. Attorney General and Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Jeremiah Sullivan Black’s marker. He was one of America’s top lawyers in the Civil War era. Despite these achievements, Black is best known today as builder of the Brockie Mansion, the predecessor of the large house and estate by the same name that stands in the hills south of York today. York County Controller Robb Green submitted this photograph. The right to know about history: York countians are known to follow government at all levels. A piece in the Codorus Valley Chronicles from May 2011 suggests this is so.
This newsletter of the Codorus Valley Area Historical Society in Jefferson is seeking information on the World War I statue in its center square. “Under the Right to Know Law,” the newsletter states, “we can ask the Borough Secretary to research the 1920-21 Borough Council minutes for information on the monument.”
Now we suspect the secretary would make the minutes available for the society to research without a right-to-know request. But this illustrates the zest the public has to be informed. It also suggests a tool for researchers to use on the local level, well, on all levels – the filing of Right to Know and Freedom of Information requests. Kick around on the website, Full Disclosure, to learn more about making such requests. Scott Blanchard, Sunday editor for the York Daily Record/Sunday News operates the site.
