Yet another Bury’s hamburger recipe drops into the cooker
She looked skeptically at the best, publicly known recipe for Bury’s hamburger sauce – a recipe that reportedly passed muster with Joe Bury himself.
I’ll get the real recipe, she said, one that appeared in your newspaper… .
She came back an hour later with the ingredients, having procured it from a relative from York Township who carries it around in her pocketbook.
Really.
That pocketbook location points to the popularity of the red-sauce-covered Bury’s burger, 20 years after the York-area restaurant chain that made them famous closed. The local chain fell prey to, among other things, the growth of McDonald’s and Burger King restaurants to form a fast-food York County. Ongoing interest in the Bury’s recipe is a sign people in the York-area are reaching back to days when a simple burger with an onion slice on top is more desirable than the current supersized fast food world.
This recipe seems far different from the one that Joe Bury reportedly blessed.
But hey, even the burgers from the two competing Bury’s stands at the York Fair – both with links to Bury’s restaurants – don’t taste alike.
Maybe the popular Joe Bury took the real secret sauce recipe to the grave.
Well, here’s the most recent recipe, the one that’s safely secured in the York Township pocketbook:
– 2 cans tomato soup
– 4 cans water (fill soup cans)
– 2 tbsp Kitchen Bouquet
– 4 tbsp sweet relish
– 3-4 onions chopped
Place hamburgers in sauce and simmer for 1 hour.
