York International & the Olympics
This illustration is the North American part of a 1997 York International Corporation advertising theme “It’s a Cool World.” The whole ad pinpoints a few of the landmark sites around the world where YORK has a cool, comforting presence. The text accompanying the ad:
Wherever you travel. Wherever you live. YORK cools the biggest and most important buildings. Gets chosen for the most critical refrigeration projects. Creates the most comfortable homes. Sponsors the most watched sporting events.
“Sponsors the most watched sporting events” refers to the Olympics. In the North American portion of “It’s a Cool World,” three Olympic sites and three U.S. Olympic Training Facilities are pinpointed. Since 1960, YORK provided refrigeration, snowmaking, and air conditioning equipment to Summer and Winter Olympic competition sites worldwide and to U.S. Olympic training facilities in Lake Placid, Colorado Springs and San Diego.
Besides being a longtime official sponsor of the United States Olympic Summer and Winter Teams, YORK was also the Official Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Sponsor for many Olympic Games. YORK paid for much of its sponsorship through value-in-kind contributions, i.e. donations of equipment to support Olympic sites and training venues.
