Work Underway on Johnson Controls Shrewsbury Development Center & YORKCO Talks

Stopping to eat, prior to attending the Stewartstown Historical Society meeting on Wednesday evening, I noticed work is underway on Johnson Controls Shrewsbury Development Center in Hopewell Township. This sign is posted along Renaissance Drive in the Stonebridge Business Center; near Exit 4 of Interstate-83. The “Financial Assistance Provided By The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania” is the $5 Million that Johnson Controls received as an incentive for keeping the complex in Pennsylvania.
In July 2013, Johnson Controls purchased several parcels of industrial zoned land in the Stonebridge Business Center; on which a new Engineering Development and Testing Complex would be built to move those functions from the Grantley Plant in Spring Garden Township. I’ve marked up a Bing.com Westward Looking Birds Eye View to point out the location of the new Johnson Controls complex in Southern York County.

After eating, I drove up on Wellspring Road. The cul-de-sac offered the following overview of the site work underway for Johnson Controls Shrewsbury Development Center.

The evenings meeting of the Stewartstown Historical Society featured an interesting talk by Dr. David Glenn; a retired dentist and local historian. He presented a program on the challenges of crossing the Susquehanna River. River Crossings encompassed how the Indians dealt with the river as a barrier, the ferry operations, and the world record length for a single span wooden bridge built by Theodore Burr at McCall’s Ferry, to the opening of the Norman Wood Bridge in 1968. If you have an interest in local history, there are many of these informative presentations all around York County every month; discover them at a local historical society near you.
I have several YORKCO talks coming up. Click on locations for links to specifics about each meeting:
- “First 60 Years of York Corporation; from 1874 to 1934” {Traces the founding of the company, as The York Manufacturing Company, through a change of focus; Air Conditioning} (Previously presented at OLLI, YCHT, and scheduled for Lower Windsor Area Historical Society on Nov. 2, 2015, and at West Manchester Township Historical Society on Nov. 16, 2015)
- “York Air Conditioning & Refrigeration; from 1935 to 2005” {Traces locally independent York Corporation through Borg-Warner days and back to independence as York International Corporation} (Previously presented at OLLI and scheduled for Lower Windsor Area Historical Society during Spring of 2016; date TBD)

I’ll be presenting “York’s Leading Industries of the Gilded Age,” at the York County Heritage Trust for their Second Saturday program on Nov. 14, 2015. As an overview, this talk highlights the diverse and interesting facts of the manufacturing community of York County during the Gilded Age. However, as the City of York Celebrates its upcoming 275th Anniversary, the talk will focus specifically on the top factories and industries based in the City of York; of which The York Manufacturing Company was one of those factories.
