Becka Hornsby of Sydney, Australia, submitted this photo of a Springetts Float after she discovered my post Springettsbury and the Knight, Sir William Springett. The maiden name of Becka’s mother is Springett. Becka made many visits to Bowral, in the highlands, to see her Aunt and Uncle. Bowral is where this photo was taken in the 1970s during their springtime parade. Becka could not get over a township being named Springettsbury. Likewise when I informed her that a community in the township, informally known as Possumtown, received their own post office in 1891, with the postal name Springett. However this post office was closed in 1908, when rural free delivery was instituted by the United States Post Office. After that, the community reverted to their previous formal name Pleasureville.

The pictured float is for the Springett family of businesses in Bowral. They include a restaurant, grocery store, bakery, arcade, ballroom, cold storage facility, soft drink bottling plant, wholesale food distribution warehouse, and a few others Becka knows she left out. Most of these businesses were either on Bong Bong Street or Wingecarribee Street.

I asked Becka if this was an Easter Parade. Her reply, “Your silly, spring begins in October.” I had a lapse of memory; seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere.
