A letter to the Editor coupled with speaking out at Springettsbury Township Board of Supervisors meetings resulted in the Township placing this bigger sign; advertising a Public Hearing on Thursday October 22, 2015, at 5:30 PM. Last week this two-sided sign was placed at the corner of Mt. Zion Road and East Market Street, with the Modernaire Motel in the background.

The complaint about the original signs was that they were so small for anyone to notice; as shown in the following illustration. The photo in the upper part of the illustration is in front of “Bloomingdale,” looking west along East Market Street. I’ve pointed to the original sign. The text on the original sign is enlarged in the lower half of the illustration.

The original signs are still in place because they contain the details that this is a public hearing about a rezoning request “from FD to CH/TCO.” The “FD” appears to be on a typo on the original signs that have been in place for the past few weeks. To better inform the public, the Township should have spelled out “from Neighborhood Commercial to Commercial Highway with Town Center Overlay.”

A shopping center is envisioned on the northeast corner of East Market Street and Mt. Zion Road in Springettsbury Township. Spring Lane LLC has proposed rezoning this corner in order to build that shopping center. The parcels affected along the Lincoln Highway contain three 19th Century homes, anchored on the east end with “Bloomingdale” and on the corner with the iconic Modernaire Motel.

These places matter in Springettsbury Township; however the bigger question is: Does Springettsbury Township really need another Shopping Center? Come out to the Public Hearing on Thursday October 22, 2015, at 5:30 PM in the Township Building at 1501 Mt. Zion Road and let your views be known to the Board of Supervisors. If enough people speak out, maybe they will act accordingly, just like they did in listening to the public about the signs.
