Early Schoolhouses gave names to many School Roads

Do you live on a School Road? If so, is the former schoolhouse still standing from which the road is so named? For example, Beshore School Road in East Manchester Township was named after Beshore’s One-Room School.

There are over one hundred School Roads in York County. Beshore is one of six School Roads beginning with the letter B: Beards School Road in North Codorus Township, Beshore School Road in East Manchester Township, Blue Hill School Road in Washington Township, Bosley School Road in Codorus Township, Bowman School Road in Hopewell Township, and Bowser School Road in Shrewsbury Township.

Beshore’s was a brick one-room schoolhouse built in 1873 and named for Jacob and Lydia Beshore. It was located at the southwest corner of North George Street Extended and Beshore School Road and was last used as a schoolhouse during the 1955/1956 school year. The school district sold Beshore’s schoolhouse and its narrow 0.64-acre lot on May 23, 1958. A Service Station was built on the eastern section of the school lot at 4044 North George Street Extended and several house trailers were placed between the Garage and Schoolhouse.

The following aerial photo of 1963 was recently posted on Retro York. It shows structures on the 0.64-acre lot at the southwest corner of Beshore School Road and North George Street Extended in East Manchester Township. This is photo 182-CYO-5 from vintageaerial.com, of which road annotations were added.

During my August 10, 2019 presentation, on Northeastern District’s One-Room Schools, I noted of the 29 one-room or earliest schoolhouses within the bounds of the present school district, 19 are still standing. A request was made of the audience to share more details on the 10 schoolhouses that no longer stand; such as photos and when they were torn down.

Two months following my presentation, Charles Stambaugh discovered a color sketch of Beshore’s School, the Service Station Garage and other later structures placed in the former schoolyard. He also provided knowledge that the schoolhouse was torn down by 1968. The sketch appears to be based upon the 1963 Vintage Aerial.

Immediately after the presentation in 2019, I started to go through PASDA Aerial Photos (maps.psiee.psu.edu/ImageryNavigator/) to bracket dates when the 10 schoolhouses were torn down. The following illustration lines up the aerial photos associated with Beshore’s School.

Per everything presented in this post, sometime between 1964 and 1968 Beshore’s One-Room Schoolhouse was torn down.
