YDR wins a dozen awards in Pennsylvania-wide news competition

Chris Dunn’s ‘Taylor-Made Walkoff’ captured a first-place award in 2013 Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors competition. The caption for the prize photo by the York Daily Record/Sunday News photographer indicated that Central York softball players gathered at home plate to cheer on pitcher Taylor Rohrbaugh, far left, as she ran home after hitting a homerun in the ninth inning of the YAIAA softball championship game. Chris wrote: ‘I basically ran out onto the field with the rest of the team when it became clear that Taylor’s hit was a long one. They gathered around homeplate to greet her, and I did my best to wedge in alongside them. Didn’t know she’d hit a homerun until I checked with the sports writer.’

The YDR just learned that we won a dozen awards in the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors competition.

This is the second big statewide competition each year, coming right after the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors Keystone Press Awards.

When the results came out just a few minutes ago, DFM CEO John Paton asked in an email:

“Anything we didn’t win.”

I wrote this to our our newsroom in the York Daily Record/Sunday News newsroom:

Combined with our 16 winners in Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors competition, our honorable mention in Dart Award competition for our Red Lion series  and other awards so far, our outstanding work is being justly recognized by our peers.

AP’s story on the awards, trimmed to reflect only the YDR winners:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ The Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors announced winners of the group’s annual writing and photo contests on Thursday.

Cash awards will be presented to the first-place winners at the PAPME’s annual convention in Harrisburg on May 17.

Judges also selected “Best of Show” winners in news and photos across all circulation divisions, and a photographer to receive the Paul Vathis Memorial Photography Portfolio Award, in honor of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer from Pennsylvania. Winners for those three prizes will be revealed at the award ceremony.

The entries were judged by editors at AP member newspapers in New York.
