The following list was developed to help a local Girl Scouts troop. You can read about that experience here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We think these tips could be helpful in many situations. Feel free to put these to use and to share with others. Let us know if you have any success stories with these, and if you would recommend any changes.<\/p>\n

Tips for interviewing on video<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stay quiet — Every noise you make is heard on camera.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Ask your question and hush up. You can silently acknowledge responses, but stay quiet.<\/li>\n
  2. Your No. 1 goal is to never have your voice heard in the final video.<\/li>\n
  3. Turn off your cell phone or anything else that might make noise.<\/li>\n
  4. Don\u2019t wear jewelry that makes noise<\/li>\n
  5. Don\u2019t fidget or move your chair bump into things<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eliminate distractions<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Find a quiet place that other people will not intrude upon.<\/li>\n
    2. You don\u2019t want your subject to be looking off camera.<\/li>\n
    3. You don\u2019t want your audience looking behind your subject.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ask questions that require a complete answer<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. A \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d response offers nothing of value<\/li>\n
      2. Frame questions along the lines of, \u201cTell me about a time when \u2026 \u201c<\/li>\n
      3. Be patient. Encourage the subject to take their time and think before answering. Wait as long as you can after you think they are done talking. You can edit out all the pauses.<\/li>\n
      4. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask the same question in a variety of ways to get a complete answer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Careful with that camera<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Fill the frame with your subject.<\/li>\n
        2. Take two steps forward.<\/li>\n
        3. Avoid zoom.<\/li>\n
        4. Try to sit behind the camera so that the subject is looking toward the lens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plan ahead<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Do your homework<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Learn as much as you can about your subject and the topic of the interview before you sit down.<\/p>\n

            ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Write out a lot of questions<\/p>\n

            iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plan your setting. Will it be quiet and comfortable? Good lighting?<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Check you equipment before arriving<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Batteries charged?<\/p>\n

              ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you have all the cords you\u2019ll need?<\/p>\n

              iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Microphone?<\/p>\n

              iv.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lights?<\/p>\n

              v.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plenty of tape or disc space?<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Check your equipment again before starting the interview<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be a reporter<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. Listen carefully to the answers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stray from your planned questions if you hear something interesting<\/p>\n

                  ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ask you subject to explain if you don\u2019t understand an answer. If you don\u2019t understand it, no one will.<\/p>\n

                    \n
                  1. Take notes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Write down questions you want to follow up on<\/p>\n

                    ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Writing notes will help you stay quiet<\/p>\n

                    iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Your notes will help you in the editing<\/p>\n

                    7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have fun!<\/p>\n

                      \n
                    1. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your subject will be<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The last question for EVERY interview<\/p>\n
