Journalism workshop at Central York High School
York Daily Record/Sunday News Business Editor Cathy Hirko and multi-platform journalists Lauren Boyer and Brittany Wilson visited Central York High School today to talk with journalism classes.
As part of their presentation, Hirko, Boyer and Wilson staged a mock news conference in which the students acted as the press pool.
The following is a fake news release given to the Central York students:
For immediate release:
Mayor of Shiloh to address theft allegationsShiloh Mayor Lauren Boyer will meet with the media Feb. 21 in Central York High School journalism classes to discuss allegations that she took money from the community coffers to build a ½-scale replica of Hershey Park in her backyard.
Mayor Boyer denies all allegations.
Boyer was hired as Shiloh’s treasurer in 2001 and was elected mayor in 2008. Loren’s husband was Shiloh’s mayor from 2000 to 2008.
“The Boyer family has given more than 12 years of service to the Shiloh community. Lauren and her family have been upstanding citizens for the past several decades. They volunteer and rise funds for the municipality,” said Boyer’s lawyer, Brittany Wilson. “The theft allegations are preposterous. Her name is sure to be cleared.”
During the news conference, the students asked questions about Boyer’s background, the alleged crime and her family life. They also live-tweeted the event from @TheNewsVroom. You can see their tweets below:
