Election season: A wonderful time of year

In my first journalism class in college, we learned that the fourth estate is a watchdog for the community. And what illustrates that better than … ELECTION SEASON!?

If you’ve been around the office lately, you’ve probably heard me grumbling at the hours it took me to compile election-related documents. It’s true, it’s stressful. And sometimes if you’ve been looking at a list of names for hours you go a little batty. Just ask those who sit around me.

But really — despite the stressful election dreams I’ve been having (and my insane decision to move to a new apartment right after) — events like elections embody why we do what we do.

Without the insanely long lists of Voters Guide questions, this Sunday’s list of all candidates on all county ballots, election preview stories, and the online Election Central, some people wouldn’t know who to vote for.

And isn’t voting one of the things that make American so free and great? Plus you get those great “I voted” stickers.

So if you haven’t checked out our election coverage so far, please do. You don’t have to look at it all. And who knows, you might learn something new.

And join us next Tuesday, Nov. 8 for what I’ve marked on my calendar as D-Day. We’ll be here all night waiting for the results to come in. Even if election work drives you crazy sometimes, there’s always election night food. And I have it on good authority that it’s already been ordered. I might also wear my pjs and slippers… it’s a late night. Shh, don’t tell.
