York poet Henry Lee Fisher’s 1908 short election verse

Henry Lee Fisher

York attorney and Pennsylvania German poet Henry Lee Fisher was born on November 3, 1822. Looking through his file today, November 3, 2012, at York County Heritage Trust, I found a unpublished poem he wrote on November 3, 1908 (his 86th birthday) for his young grandson.

Since the subject is the 1908 presidential election, I thought it even more appropriate:

We spend our years as a tale that is to be told
And sometimes, like twins, to young and to old
As happens to us this November’s 3rd day.
Though it happen again, yet it nevermore may.
But one thing we hope for and firmly rely on
Peace, health and prosperity
Be it Taft’s first run or Bill Bryan’s third tryon.

To master Harold L. Fisher from his grandpa
Nov. 3, 1908.
