York Fair 75 years ago

Only a few more days left to catch this year’s York Fair–food–top entertainers–food–animals–food–crafts–food–harness races–food (you get the picture).

York County Heritage Trust Library/Archives has file boxes full of information, photographs and postcards of the York Fairs of the past, all shared by generous donors for us today and for future generations to enjoy.

One item caught my eye–a thick book put out by the fair in 1937. It is crammed full of everything you needed to know to enter the competitions or just enjoy the fair. The information is interspersed with many pages of advertisements giving us glimpses of the York County of 75 years ago.

Note that the fair was then in October and they were billing it as the “84th Exposition.” That would date the first of the current York Fair’s incarnation to 1884. It seems to have aged more lately.
