As I have pointed out before, York Countians have always been fond of entertainment. Theater, circus, movies–they have always been well received, with top national and international stars appearing here.

Then there were the amateur theatricals, always presented with enthusiasm, but not always with the best of talent. The item below, from the Red Lion news section of the February 3, 1908 York Daily gives a rather kind review of what sounds like a rather lame performance.

The most peculiar part is the rather odd thank-you gift given to the leader of the orchestra.

“Red Lion, Feb 2.

Olympic Dramatic Company

There were some hitches in the presentation of the comedy-drama, “A Serious Family,” by the Olympic Dramatic company on Saturday evening, due in a measure to a lack of practice, yet on the whole the young people who made up the cast gave a creditable performance to a good sized audience. Naturally, as in the presentation of any play by local talent, there were some better than others, and they came in for a liberal share of applause. Several specialties introduced met with favor.

The members of the orchestra at the close of the entertainment made Lewis Wecker, of York, the leader, a present of a dressed 16 pound pig, which he highly appreciated.”
