Teenage girls in ecstasy over Rick Springfield at 1982 York Fair
I see that in the six years that I have been blogging, 20 of my posts have concerned some aspects of the York Fair. I have written about food, especially Bury’s hamburgers; about harness racing, which this year is Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:30 (free); about prize winners and entertainers. I have shared postcards of the fair from the York County Heritage Trust collection. This link will take you to all my York Fair posts.
This year, I’m featuring a few photos out of the over 425 cataloged under “York Fair” at the YCHT Library/Archives.
There wasn’t much information with the above photo. It looks like it might be a press photo, but it isn’t stamped with the name of the paper and the date, as they usually are. It was just identified as teens at a York Fair concert. Thanks to the sharp eyes and good memories of Lila Fourhman-Shaull and Cindy Doll, we feel sure that it was taken at Rick Springfield’s 1982 fair appearance. I didn’t get a chance to check the York Daily Record and York Dispatch microfilms at York County Heritage Trust, but a Google search turned up an article from the Gettysburg Times on a very successful 1982 York Fair. The weather was good for all nine days, and the grandstand acts were the top entertainers of the day: Barbara Mandrell, Willie Nelson, Boxcar Willie and Sylvia and the Oak Ridge Boys, as well as Springfield.
The expressions on the girls’ faces are priceless. Do you recognize anyone? Maybe yourself?
By the way girls, Rick Springfield is 64 now, just a year away from Medicare age. He is still on the concert circuit; tonight he is appearing at the House of Blues in Dallas. The closest venue on his busy schedule is October 19 at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City. There is still time to get your tickets.
