Seventh Journal of York County Heritage now available

Journal2016-1

The 2016 edition of the Journal of York County Heritage will be officially launched on Thursday, September 15, with a reception at the York County History Center Museum, Library and Archives at 250 East Market Street in York. Doors open at 6:30, with the program beginning at 7 p.m. The authors of each journal article will share their insights on their subject.

YCHC members have already received their copy in the mail, a benefit of membership, and copies are available for sale at the YCHC book store.

This is the seventh year of the successful publication, with a variety of articles of various aspects of York County history. As a member of the YCHC publications committee and having helped edit the journal, I can say we are again quite proud of the research and writing done by the contributors.

Scott L. Mingus, Sr.’s paper is “’This Tremendous Decision’: Prigg vs. Pennsylvania.” This article ties in with Mingus’s new book, The Ground Swallowed Them Up: Slavery and the Underground Railroad in York County, Pa.

Sean McComas wrote “Do What You Can: The York Plan’s Success and Its Influence on Industrial Mobilization during World War II.

Rebecca Anstine’s piece is “The Peach Bottom Circuit: Recovering African-American Churches, Graveyards, Camp Meetings and Pastors.”

The 2017 Journal also continues the ongoing publication of letters of James Smith, York County’s Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Submissions are invited for the eighth edition of the Journal of York County Heritage, to be published in the fall of 2017. The deadline for articles is December 1, 2016. The journal was created in 2010 to celebrate York County history, material culture, cultural heritage, and people. The manuscript must be original, unpublished, written in English, and limited to 3,000 words. Click here for or contact Lila Fourhman-Shaull, Directory of Library & Archives at the York County History Center.

The YCHC Publications Committee has chosen these themes for the next four editions:
• 2017: The region and its people west of the Susquehanna before the settlement of York in 1741
• 2018: World War I era
• 2019: York race riots, race relations, and diversity
• 2020: York County women’s history
Please note that manuscripts on other topics will be accepted for these publications. Preference will also be given to those that use the York County History Center’s collection, either in full or in part. Photos and illustrations are welcomed, but not required.
