Glen Rock Company Made High End Furniture
In response to a previous post on York County furniture manufacturers, a couple of people commented on the Glen Traditionals furniture manufacturer in Glen Rock. They made quality French Provincial or Italian style furniture with ornate carving. Their furniture was distributed over a wide area. According to one comment, movie star Jayne Mansfield owned a Glen Traditionals bedroom suite.
The factory closed quite a few years ago, but the furniture seemed to hold up well and turns up occasionally for resale. I just did an internet search and found a “nice & fancy” Glen Traditionals “County French” deeply carved king/queen headboard that originally sold for $1,800. It is being offered for $399 in New Jersey. I assume that some York County stores sold the furniture locally, so perhaps there are quite a few pieces still around the area.
I haven’t found a lot on the Glen Traditionals company yet, but I did find some nice period photos of the furniture in the York County Heritage Trust Library/Archives. (See above and below.) Please let me know if you have any more information on the manufacturer.
According to the text accompanying the photos, the furniture pictured was all made of good hardwoods: cherry, African mahogany and birch. Fanciful painted finishes, however were in style. Colors offered were coral mist, pearwood, white mist, white with gold, Venetian white, Venetian gold and Piazza. The latter was probably the heavily shaded dark finish shown in the bottom photo.
