York County goes on vacation
I had an email a little while ago from John Loeper, who brings up a subject that’s perfect for this time of year.
He says, “Yorkers on vacation past and present… where did Yorkers go summer after summer for the big getaway? I know many Yorkers have gone to Ocean City, Md., for years, but other families (like mine) also traveled to Wildwood, N.J., each and every year, plus I know of quite a few families that used to go to the ‘mountains’ like Potter County, etc. I have a few thoughts I would like to post about this subject and I bet others do as well.”
John, you’re absolutely right – what a great idea!
In the spirit of getting us started, I invite you to check out a snapshot of SOME places York County residents have visited. “Vacation with YDR” is an ongoing series in which our Living department asks people to pack a copy of the Daily Record when they travel, and then share a photo with us. This interactive map gives you a peek at those! We have had a LOT of submissions so far, including some to some pretty far-out destinations.
Interestingly, one of our family’s vacation spots is featured – we often stay in Lewes, Del., and travel between there and Cape May, N.J., via the ferry. For a while, I was an Ocean City, Md., girl; earlier, Seaside Heights, N.J. was a summer spot when I traveled with my sister Carol’s family.
A more local vacation spot for many years was for my mom and I to stay for a long weekend in Strasburg, Lancaster County, and do my back-to-school shopping at the outlets.
And now, my husband and I vacation anywhere and everywhere we can, mostly in Pennsylvania but with occasional jaunts to surrounding states. And we’re always looking for new destination possibilities, so I’m excited to hear your thoughts on “quintessential Yorker vacations” past and present. Please leave a comment!
