{"id":2744,"date":"2012-10-25T10:16:31","date_gmt":"2012-10-25T14:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"\/onlyyork\/?p=2744"},"modified":"2012-10-25T10:16:31","modified_gmt":"2012-10-25T14:16:31","slug":"mail-call-memories-of-1940s-get-together-locales-from-gloria-myers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yorkblog.com\/onlyyork\/mail-call-memories-of-1940s-get-together-locales-from-gloria-myers\/","title":{"rendered":"Mail call: Memories of 1940s get-together locales from Gloria Myers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s letter comes from <b>Gloria Myers<\/b> of Manchester Township.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that it&#8217;s so nice to read that other people have such fond memories of their growing-up years in York.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are some of the places in the early &#8217;40s that we got together with friends for something good to eat, and to dance,&#8221; she writes, adding that they also celebrated school victories at these hangouts as well!<\/p>\n<p>She starts off talking about the <b>Ramona Restaurant<\/b> on North George Street, across from Gregory&#8217;s. They went there &#8220;for chicken salad and CMP sundaes,&#8221; Gloria said.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was <b>Melvin&#8217;s Drive-In<\/b> across from what is now York County Shopping Center on East Market Street, where Gloria recalls pork barbecue and frosty malts, as well as dancing in the back. (We talked earlier about Melvin&#8217;s <a href=\"\/onlyyork\/2011\/03\/12\/yum-even-more-restaurants-to-r\/\">back in early 2011!<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>At the <b>Town Talk<\/b>, at College and Salem avenues, Gloria recalled french fries with gravy and dancing. (My friend <b>Yvonne<\/b> had also shared about that venue <a href=\"\/onlyyork\/2011\/06\/03\/memories-of-teen-hangouts-from\/\">last summer!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then there was <b>Julius Dairy<\/b>, Gloria recalled, on North Richland Avenue across from St. Rose of Lima Church. There, they had homemade ice cream and dancing upstairs, she noted.<\/p>\n<p>She adds, &#8220;I wonder how many remember White Rose and Playland roller skating arenas.&#8221; You&#8217;re in luck, Gloria, because <a href=\"\/onlyyork\/2012\/03\/23\/memories-of-playland-roller-skating-rink\/\">we have many of memories of those places already!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As you can tell, we did a lot of walking, dancing and being with friends,&#8221; Gloria writes. &#8220;If we were lucky someone had a car and money for gasoline.
