Ask Joan: Unanswered questions edition
Usually in Ask Joan, I mix it up; I share both questions I DO have the answers to, as well as some where I’m seeking details from you in order to help a reader.
Today, there’s no mixing. This is all stuff I just haven’t been able to figure out. If you have answers to any of these questions, please do leave a comment, because the “askers” would love for someone smarter than me to be able to help them!
What’s inside
1. and 2. Seeking date of plane crash
3. Seeking date from phone numbers?
1. My question is the DATE that a small plane crashed outside of Dallastown. This would have been between 1959 and 1962. I have tried to access the newspaper records but have not had any success. Perhaps you could help.
– Gregory L. Brenneman
Related to that is 2. When did an USAF C-119 (Flying Box Car) crash in a field south of Dallastown, PA along Route 214? This area is known as ‘The Swamp’. This happen in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. If I remember correctly, the cargo door came off and it crash landed in the meadow on the Innerst farm. All were killed. Many remember it but do not recall the date. I’ve been searching for years to find date but no luck. I found a picture of it in my Mother’s Scrapbook but no date is attached.
– Don Attig
Any information on that date for Gregory and Don? I have looked into this a bit, but our in-house records really don’t date back quite that far. About my only suggestion would be to try the York County History Center, but I am wondering if maybe someone from the area remembers off the top of their head!
3. I just picked up an old Glen Rock cookbook with ads that had only 1 letter and 2 numbers for their phone number. I’m trying to get a date of around when it was published.
– Donna Miller
This is such a hard question, because phone numbers only expanded as the areas they were in did. So, at a time when York might have had five-character phone numbers, Glen Rock maybe only would have had three… but I can’t be sure. Again, anyone from the area have a ballpark guess for Donna?
Got any questions? Ask Joan using the form at right. I’ll attempt to answer them in a future “Ask Joan” column on this blog. I get a large volume, so it might take me a while, but I hope to be able to answer as many as possible!
