New Year’s pork and sauerkraut, the 2012 edition

You might remember that around this time in 2010, I started asking you if pork and sauerkraut is a New Year must-have in your house.

Well, it turns out you guys really like it. I know. Shocking!

One commenter, Justine Toombs, wrote: “I grew up in Western PA. Every year my family eats sauerkraut and pork for New Year’s. It is easy to make and delicious to eat!! All you need is a Crockpot and sauerkraut, large chunks of onion, a quartered apple, brown sugar, browned pork chops (browning the pork chops allows you to scrape brownbits into the kraut adding flavor), and hot dogs. Before you serve, take out the apple and onion as it is added for flavor. Then for leftovers we eat kraut-dogs!! Mmmm, yummy!”

Hubby would probably LOVE that. He mentioned that kielbasa is the kind of “pork” that he likes best with sauerkraut. He did not get any last New Year’s Day, and he probably won’t again this year! (We do usually have a pork roast, though.)

One complaint: I remember that last New Year’s Eve, the grocery store was PACKED and the meat counter was cleared out. Here’s my public-service announcement. If you know today that you’re having this on Jan. 1, go buy it now! Pork freezes, folks, and kraut can be refrigerated!

So, are you partaking this year?
